Important Risks In Uterine Fibroid Embolization Procedure

Uterine fibroid embolization is a medical procedure that is known to shrink fibroid tumors. If you suffer from the symptoms of fibroids, then this procedure may have been recommended as an alternative to fibroid removal surgery.  It is very important to understand the risks in the uterine fibroid embolization procedure because both short and long term complications are possible.

What Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

The objective is to block blood flow to the fibroids in or on the uterus.  A radiologist performs the procedure which is also called uterine artery embolization because a special solution is injected into the artery that provides blood to the fibroids.

Using a catheter, a contrast dye is injected into the femoral artery. A fluoroscopy, which provides a cross section imagery of the arteries by following the contrast, is performed to guide the catheter to the uterine artery that is supplying blood to the uterus and of course to the fibroids.

Once that artery is found, the next step is to inject through the catheter a polyvinyl alcohol solution that is proven to block blood flow to a degree where the fibroids in the uterus are starved of blood supply.

Why Is Fibroid Embolization A Popular Option To Surgical Removal of Fibroids?

  • Fibroid embolization recovery time is significantly less than if patient elects to have fibroids removal surgery or a hysterectomy.
  • The size of fibroids on the uterus will shrink significantly and fairly quickly after the procedure.
  • Smaller fibroids tend to cause less of the typical symptoms of fibroids such as pelvic pressure, constant lower back pain, heavy menstrual bleeding between periods, weight gain and more.
  • Embolization for fibroids does not require an abdominal incision and the procedure requires less time in the hospital.
  • The patient can manage multiple fibroids in multiple locations with this one process, and can be fairly confident that her symptoms will subside or be reduced.
  • The procedure can be repeated as needed to once again reduce the size of fibroids in the uterus.

Are There Possible Side Effects To The Procedure?

So what are the risks?  Why is it so important to consider the possible side effects?  It is true that most women have side effects for maybe a week or so after completing the procedure and no lasting problems.  These short term issues may include:

  •  Developing and infection.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Fatigue.
  • Abdominal pain, cramping.
  • Vaginal discharge.

What About Longer Term Complications?

  • Uterine infection, if not treated promptly, can cause an infection of the blood condition called sepsis. This can lead to what we recognize as septic shock, inflammation and blockage in blood vessels and ultimately this condition will start to shut down organs.
  • Hematoma.
  • Injury to the uterine artery or the uterus itself, possibly leading to internal bleeding or hemorrhaging.
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles, possibly long term.
  • Infertility.

The majority of women with fibroids and the symptoms that go with them are within the child bearing years. This is logical because high levels of estrogen are known to promote growth of existing fibroids. Small fibroids, especially if not near the cervix opening, tend to not be an issue.  It is when they grow considerably or multiply that the chances for problematic symptoms increase exponentially.

Yet one of the biggest risks to electing uterine fibroid embolization to deal with fibroids is the fairly high chance for infertility.

Uterine Fibroids And Some Treatments For Fibroids – Both Risk Infertility

If a woman has multiple fibroids, or large fibroids in the uterus lining or near the cervix opening this condition and the symptoms that go with it can prevent her from getting pregnant.  If trying to get pregnant for 6 months or longer with no success, especially if you already have other children, then you need to examine your current health situation.  Do some research on common symptoms that go along with uterine fibroids.  You may need to take steps to reduce or eliminate the fibroids first, before you can have success with a pregnancy.

Of course if you want to get pregnant then you simply do not want to consider the embolization procedure or any type of fibroids removal surgery. Instead, you need to quickly become an expert on how to shrink fibroids or even eliminate them with natural, homeopathic treatments.  Fibroids and pregnancy don’t go well together and in fact having fibroids during pregnancy is potentially going to cause problems as well, making for a very uncomfortable term for you.

Why Seek A Natural Way To Eliminate Fibroids And Avoid Invasive Procedures?

Having uterine fibroids by itself is not life threatening so even though you may have aggravating and possibly chronic symptoms developing, you have time to fight the growth of the fibroids.  You should do the research and find out why you have the problem, what you can do to reduce the symptoms and in most cases even eliminate the fibroids over a few months time.  The presence of fibroids tend to be a symptom of a hormonal imbalance plus development of conditions in the body that promote the growth and symptoms further.
